Steenbergs was set up in 2003 by Axel and Sophie Steenberg (who are still very much at the helm of the business). Focus has always been on organic and the environment. We started with organic herbs and spices, pioneering Fairtrade spices (we were the first in the UK licensed to import and sell with the logo) and have over 400 different spices, herbs and blends (all blended here in North Yorkshire to our own recipes). We also have added a whole range of interesting peppers including Grains of Paradise and long pepper. Our blends include ranges of curry mixes, BBQ rubs and Arabic spice blends.

We branched out to loose leaf tea and herbal teas when we noticed a synergy with our suppliers. Spices trees often provide shade in tea plantations and we have a very personal interest in blended, herbal and single estate teas. We also make baking extracts, flower waters and mulling spices for alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.
Steenbergs products are stocked in farm shops, food halls, organic shops and delis as well as a number of distributors (particularly for the baking extracts range). Our two factories are based just outside Ripon in the Barker Business Park, in the same location that we started in 22 years ago. Surrounded by rural Yorkshire it very much keeps us rooted in Yorkshire. The environment is at the heart of what we do, we are organic, certified B-Corp (doing good through business) and environmentally audited. We are solar powered (including with a battery to store excess energy), living roof and rainwater harvested loos, as well as investing in new and old woodland for carbon capture and biodiversity. We are SALSA certified and on Sedex.
What you get with Steenbergs is people with over 40 years of knowledge who are based firmly at the heart of the business. We also supply food producers in larger amounts from a kilo upwards.
